Trimble's Cellular Fleet Management Product Receives Certification for Verizon Wireless' WIN4 Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 6, 2000 - Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) announced today that its cellular-based fleet management product has received certification and approval for use on Verizon Wireless' WIN4 North American wireless network.

The approval of Trimble's CrossCheckTM AMPS gives system integrators and service providers the opportunity to offer a turnkey, cost-effective and nationwide asset management solution with no roaming charges. Trimble selected CrossCheck AMPS as the first product to use the WIN4 system because the AMPS cellular network provides the greatest coverage in North America.

CrossCheck AMPS with its patented IQEvent EngineTM technology integrates Global Positioning System (GPS), cellular and computing technologies into a single, low-cost mobile positioning and communications system. CrossCheck AMPS uses the standard wireless analog AMPS cellular network to send GPS data and messages from mobile units to base stations running Trimble's FleetVision® software. An optional handset allows CrossCheck AMPS to be used for voice communications as well.

The system's IQEvent Engine supports automated monitoring and reporting of vehicle activity and status. An alert report, for example, automatically sends the vehicle's location and status to the operations center which can respond by remotely activating the vehicle's security systems, such as door locks, ignition lockout, sirens or lights.

CrossCheck's flexible software can be adapted to virtually all fleet applications, from armored car transport to limousine service and from utility fleets to construction equipment.

Verizon Wireless, developed the WIN4 platform to provide seamless connectivity of national data and data with voice service using established wireless and wireline networks to route and deliver information. WIN4 provides seamless data and voice service by automatically connecting Trimble's CrossCheck AMPS to any of the nationwide WIN4 service sites. This makes the service far lower cost in applications where roaming is required.

Field trials of a fleet management system incorporating Trimble's CrossCheck AMPS and FleetVision have been successfully completed for a major national account.

About WIN4

WIN4 is a wireless network designed to support the growing traffic (data or data with voice content) between cars, gas meters, computers and other machines and the people who need to manage and monitor them. Developed by GTE Wireless, the WIN4 network can accommodate messages of any size and provides coverage throughout the United States and Canada, through arrangements with more than 55 wireless carriers.

WIN4 provides the seamless connectivity of a national data and data with voice service utilizing embedded wireless and wireline networks to route and deliver information. WIN4 utilizes a patent pending Call Management Platform. Inherent in the architecture are fraud prevention measures which obviate the need for PIN codes and temporary brownouts, tremendously increasing call completion for critical applications.
