Trimble Recon Handheld Computers Help Winnipeg Parking Authority
Improve Enforcement, Increase Revenue

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept, 12, 2006— Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) today announced that the Winnipeg Parking Authority (WPA) is using the Trimble Recon® rugged handheld computer as part of a comprehensive parking management system. Equipped with T2 Flex software from T2 Systems, the Recon handheld computers give the WPA real-time wireless communications for writing electronic parking tickets, as well as integration with a central database.

Winnipeg issues about 160,000 parking citations every year. Previously, the tickets were hand-written in triplicate; one copy went to the vehicles owner, one was scanned into an image bank, and one had to be manually entered into a police database. Paper tickets were easily lost and once a citation went into the database, there was no way of finding a record without the citation number. So it was easy for violators to ignore tickets, and the WPA had a backlog of $5.5 million Canadian in unpaid parking fines.

With the Recon handheld computers and T2 Flex software, officers can look up information, write electronic tickets and upload the completed tickets immediately to the central database.

Integrating a wireless network into handheld ticket-writing technology allows our field officers to have the right information in front of them whenever they need it. We can now perform permit searches from the field, said David Hill, the WPAs Chief Operating Officer. Officers can also look up a vehicle to see the owners history of paid or unpaid tickets.

It allows us to be more lenient with good customers who have a history of paying their tickets, and concentrate more time on modifying the behaviors of frequent offenders, Hill said.

The improved parking enforcement system has also helped the WPA generate more revenue. After importing 81,000 unpaid citations into the T2 Flex database, the WPA sent out the first round of monthly statements. Hill said that within two weeks, the WPA had closed more than 4,000 of these outstanding accounts, bringing in $520,000 Canadian in backlog fines. The WPA will continue sending monthly statements until all fines have been paid.
