Trimble Awarded Public Safety Contract in Orlando

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 22, 2000 -- Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) announced today that it has been awarded a Global Positioning System (GPS)-based Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system integration contract by the City of Orlando, Fla. The contract calls for Trimble to initially equip over 115 vehicles for the City's Fire, Emergency Medical Service and Police operations to cover the Orlando area. Trimble's AVL Subsystem is used to locate, manage, and assist in the dispatch of vehicles for enhanced fleet operations. The contract is valued at $900,000.
"It's a life saving investment," said Orlando's Mayor, Glenda E. Hood. "The system enhances our City's public safety efforts by increasing the efficiency of our emergency vehicles."
Under the contract, Trimble will serve as the prime contractor to incorporate AVL and integrate Plant Equipment, Inc.'s (PEI) ORION MapStar displays into the primary computerized dispatching operations. Trimble will also provide Geographical Information System (GIS) services and software from PEI to enable the City's departments to independently maintain and update maps and street address records. A key feature to be implemented in the Orlando system is PEI's automated routing software which utilizes physical geographies and attributes of the street network to intelligently predict the travel time for any number of vehicles to a given incident.
Trimble's AVL Subsystem
Trimble's AVL Subsystem is one of the most responsive tools for achieving maximum fleet efficiency. It is a comprehensive system of fully integrated products, including a PSC-200TM intelligent data controller with a built-in GPS receiver, an EchoXLTM message data terminal, and base station software packages for AVL management and communications control. These products work together to track vehicles or report vehicle/crew status. Trimble's AVL Subsystem provides the dispatcher with continuous feedback from the fleet. This information can be integrated with an existing Computer Aided Dispatch and map display resource.
Trimble has extensive experience providing GPS-based fleet management systems for customers with both small and large operations. These customers include the police and fire departments, ambulance services, army proving grounds, courier services, towing companies, public transportation systems and taxi services.
