Summary

What is Stabicad, who is it designed for, and what does it include? We sat down with Brad Freeman, business development manager at Trimble, to answer the most common questions about Stabicad MEP design software, including its features, UK-specific calculations, Revit and AutoCAD workflows, manufacturer content and subscription options.

What is Stabicad?

Trimble Stabicad is a comprehensive MEP design and engineering solution for M&E engineers and contractors. Designed to run seamlessly inside Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD, or as a standalone CAD platform, it speeds up, simplifies and de-risks the design process across 2D, 3D and full BIM workflows.

Who is Stabicad for?

Stabicad is built for UK mechanical and electrical engineers, BIM coordinators and MEP Design Technicians. As Brad explains, standard CAD tools simply aren't built for M&E precision: “Traditional design platforms were originally created with broad drafting or architecture in mind. Because of this, their standard MEP components often lack the real-world accuracy needed for construction which leads to unnecessary extra work. More importantly, the built-in calculation engines are often unreliable and not localised to UK standards like BS 7671 or CIBSE, forcing engineers to duplicate effort across separate spreadsheets and software tools.”

What does Stabicad do?

Put simply, Stabicad gives M&E engineers and contractors the power to design faster and smarter directly inside their platform of choice. By integrating time-saving productivity tools, multi-region compliant calculations and an extensive library of always up-to-date manufacturer content directly into the design environment, teams can create accurate 2D and 3D MEP models with total confidence. The result? No duplicated data entry, fewer costly errors and a streamlined workflow from initial design to final reporting.

What is included in a Stabicad subscription?

Trimble offers flexible subscription packages tailored by discipline, platform choice and project role to ensure you only pay for what your business needs.

Brad explains, “We’ve structured our licensing so that you can deploy the exact tools your teams require, and our expert team is always available to help you configure the perfect package for your business needs:

  • Stabicad for Revit Mechanical: A complete mechanical package providing localised UK calculations, intelligent 3D modelling tools and time-saving productivity tools.

  • Stabicad for Revit Electrical: Packed with comprehensive electrical modelling features and integrated UK calculations, also including ProDesign for BS 7671 wiring compliance.

  • Stabicad for Design Technicians: Specially tailored for BIM coordinators and Revit technicians who need advanced 3D drafting, clash detection and productivity tools without the added cost of core calculation engines.

  • Stabicad for AutoCAD Mechanical: Bridges the gap between traditional CAD drafting and intelligent modelling—delivering mechanical drafting tools and verified mechanical calculations.

  • Stabicad for IntelliCAD Mechanical: Offers mechanical modelling and calculation capabilities with no external CAD licenses required, ensuring fast, accurate and compliant delivery without the extra overhead.

Best of all, you aren't just getting design software. Every single Stabicad subscription includes full access to Trimble Connect for cloud collaboration and file sharing, StabiBASE for central project standardisation and access to the MEPcontent library for localised manufacturer data right out of the box.”

What are some of Stabicad’s top features?

Stabicad contains lots of useful features that help M&E engineers do their jobs more effectively without having to change the way they work. Some of the most popular features include:

  • Integrated multiregional calculations: Accurately perform complex M&E calculations directly within your model for multiple regulatory authorities.

  • MEPcontent browser: Get instant access to more than 600,000 articles, including UK-specific manufacturer data.

  • Nodesolver tool: Save time when working on drawing and clash resolution by automatically proposing solutions for complex pipe and duct connections.

  • Autorouting: Automatically places fittings and updates pipes, ducts and related properties during system modelling or modification.

  • StabiBASE: Allows users to create corporate master templates, manage drawing settings and project administration, and access the central engineering database.

  • Trimble Connect integration: Enables cloud-based collaboration so teams can easily share models, track version history and manage project data in real time.

Why use Stabicad?

Stabicad transforms how M&E teams deliver projects by replacing fragmented tools with a unified workflow. Engineers can model, calculate and report in one place—without ever leaving their primary software environment

“Traditionally, teams use disconnected Excel spreadsheets and standalone calculation tools. By bringing the engineering calculations directly into the design space, Stabicad eliminates data re-entry and saves valuable hours.”

Beyond time savings, it drives constructability: “By using Stabicad, engineers can speed up the design process through a host of specialised productivity tools and direct access to a rich library of manufacturer-specific content. In fact, feedback and customer case studies show customers have sped up their design process by up to 3 times!”

How does Stabicad support teams working in both 2D and 3D?

Stabicad bridges the gap between traditional 2D drafting and full 3D BIM workflows, allowing teams to collaborate seamlessly regardless of the software platform individual engineers use.

Brad explains, “Many firms operate in hybrid environments, some team members produce 2D schematic layouts in AutoCAD while others build detailed 3D models in Revit. Stabicad unifies these workflows. The unique exchange functionality enables direct cross-product compatibility between Stabicad for AutoCAD and Stabicad for Revit. This allows users to transition smoothly between platforms, leveraging the strengths of both to optimise their overall design process.”

Brad adds, “Because all Stabicad products share the same underlying engineering logic through StabiBASE and localised data from MEPcontent, engineers maintain complete consistency across your project documentation without duplicating effort, re-entering calculation data or risking miscommunication between design stages.”

Is Stabicad localised to the UK?

Unlike other MEP design software, Stabicad is fully localised for the UK market, from integrated calculations down to the content library.

“Localisation isn't platform-dependent,” Brad emphasises. “On MEPcontent.com for example, you can easily filter localised UK manufacturers. Every piece of that content, whether it’s a 3D Revit family or a 2D/3D DWG file, is tailored for UK requirements.

On top of that, our mechanical and electrical calculation engines are governed directly by UK standards like CIBSE and IET Wiring Regulations, giving you complete confidence in your engineering outputs.”

What types of content are available in Stabicad?

There is a vast library of content available within Stabicad, thanks to the MEPcontent integration. It offers instant access to ready-to-use .rfa, .dwg and .ifc files, ranging from generic placeholder elements to intelligent Product Line Sheets (PLS) that drive automated routing.

Brad expands on how this adapts to evolving project needs: “Stabicad offers detailed generic and manufacturer-specific content. As you progress through the RIBA stages, you can convert generic elements to specific manufacturer product lines, or vice versa, with just a few clicks through Stabicad’s built-in StabiBASE tool.”

What is StabiBASE?

As a follow-up question, we asked what StabiBASE was. Brad clarifies, “This is our back-end project management solution inside Stabicad. Within here, you receive pre-configured project templates and it’s complete with standard naming conventions, colours for service types and more. You can set up your engineering sizing preferences such as minimum cable sizes and flow rates. You also use StabiBASE to set permissions for each user, which once set, is pushed out to ensure that everyone’s working in a consistent method.”
