The digital construction revolution - on the way to a paperless construction site

Whether floor plans, delivery bills or protocols: there is a high risk of losing or mixing up important documents on the construction site. And who can guarantee that the document in question is really the most up-to-date?

The transition from the familiar "pen & paper" construction site management to a fully digital construction site is a milestone that not only avoids the errors just mentioned, but also increases the overall efficiency of a project and speeds up its implementation. Networked construction gives everyone involved the transparency they need to work together more efficiently. Networking the various parties involved in all phases of a project contributes to higher productivity throughout the supply chain by streamlining processes, preventing delays and thus leading to the best possible result and fast project completion.

The use of modern technologies in the construction industry is not only revolutionizing workflows, but also creating fundamentally new concepts and processes for the construction of infrastructure, buildings and living spaces. This change, driven by innovations such as building information modeling (BIM) and artificial intelligence (AI), promises a more efficient, sustainable and future-oriented construction world. Due to the increasing transformation and digitalization within the construction industry, the digital construction site is no longer a distant vision of the future, but is increasingly becoming a reality.

But even if the advantages of a fully digital construction site are obvious, the path to it is very difficult for many companies: traditional processes and methods have been established for years, if not decades. Employees need to learn new skills, while companies need to invest in the right digital tools and technologies for them. Uncertainty about which solutions are best and concerns about data loss or theft are omnipresent.

Why construction projects need a common data environment

A key aspect of digital transformation in the construction industry is the introduction of a common data environment (CDE). Such a common data environment is always cloud-based, which enables the central storage, access and sharing of all data associated with a construction project. This includes, for example, BIM models, contracts, cost estimates, reports or detailed material specifications. Multidisciplinary project participants - internal and external - can access the CDE from any location using a computer, cell phone, tablet or machines on site.

CDEs are used in a variety of construction projects, including heavy civil and commercial buildings. These large-scale construction projects involve a complex network of stakeholders and rely on the exchange of large amounts of data. A CDE facilitates this exchange by providing all stakeholders - from designers to contractors to owners - with easy access to real-time project data as a single source of truth for all stakeholders. Cloud-based software solutions developed specifically for the construction industry allow architects, engineers, contractors and clients to collaborate in real time. Changes in plans and schedules are immediately visible to all, reducing misunderstandings and increasing efficiency. CDE plays a crucial role in reducing errors, meeting deadlines and optimizing the use of resources.

At the same time, these comprehensive software solutions raise the extremely important question of data security. Regular updating and further development of the software by the provider is just as essential as the creation of regular backups and the provision of secure log-in functions. We have compiled some helpful tips and further information for you in our guide to choosing the best construction project management software.
