Moelven Töreboda AB has designed one of the Nordic region's largest glulam halls for Catena in Jänköping together with BRA, with Elgiganten as tenant
Background information
Moelven Töreboda AB, a leading supplier of frame solutions, has been supplying glulam frames and steel structures to a wide range of construction projects since 1919. Their expertise covers everything from project planning to the delivery of complete construction kits. One of their most ambitious projects to date is the construction of Elgiganten's new warehouse in Jönköping, a project that began in 2022 and was completed in spring 2024. With its impressive 80,000 square meters, this is one of the Nordic region's largest glulam halls.
The challenge
The project, despite its size, was not technically complex, but the size of the project placed high demands on careful planning and handling of large quantities of materials. A crucial factor in ensuring that all components, from beams to bolts, were assembled correctly and on time was the use of buildable models.
"The buildable models have significantly improved our work process," says Per-Johan Persson, Project Manager and CAD Developer at Moelven. "Since the model accurately represents the real building, the risk of errors during the construction process is reduced. It helps us avoid misunderstandings and ensures that all parts fit from the start," he continues.
The solution with Tekla
Since 2007, Moelven has used Tekla Structures as a tool for 3D modeling and design of building frames. For Elgiganten's warehouse project, they also used Trimble Connect and Tekla Model Sharing to manage the large amount of information and ensure effective communication and collaboration between the teams in Töreboda and the sister factory in Norway.
"This project is the biggest we've done so far," says Per-Johan Persson. "Everything that was to be delivered was included in the model. If we assemble a screw, that screw has a part number - everything is integrated, and we have no paper specifications."
Project implementation
With a team of six designers, four engineers and five project managers, Moelven was able to execute the project with high precision. By using Tekla Structures, the team was able to keep track of the progress throughout the project and ensure that all phases went according to plan. Using User Defined Attributes (UDA) and color coding, the team was able to easily visualize and track the progress of the project, identify potential clashes in the models and ensure that all components fit together perfectly.
"We know exactly where all the nuts go and how many are used in the construction. We usually have over 100,000 parts in the model, but thanks to Tekla Structures we know the exact location of every part. That's what's so great about Tekla - the program handles this amount of detail with ease, giving us excellent control over both fabrication and assembly," says Marie Lavén, Project Manager at Moelven.
