Contributions and challenges of the digital twin in BIM

BIM, or "Building information modeling", involves the creation of digital representations of a building's physical and functional characteristics. In the field of 3D modeling, it is also often referred to as the "digital twin" - a fairly recent term, with varying interpretations. Here's a closer look at this key concept in digital transformation.

What is a digital twin?

As the name suggests, a digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical object. The aim is to transpose the

real world

in a digital environment, all as accurately as possible. To create a digital twin, we use a combination ofartificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis. These technologies generate digital simulations that update automatically and almost instantaneously according to the physical object.

The digital twin works thanks to machine learning, a sophisticated learning system that enriches itself autonomously via :

  • sensors that transmit real-time data on the system's operating status;

  • experts (especially engineers) with in-depth knowledge of the industrial sector;

  • the contribution of other similar machines and the environment of which it is a part.

is a powerful tool for analyzing and optimizing any design project. It enables you to test several configurations, detect potential weak points and maximize performance even before the final product is manufactured. It also offers the possibility, once the object has been built :

  • closely monitor performance and use;

  • carry out preventive maintenance to identify potential problems and resolve them quickly.

Finally, the digital twin can be used for training and apprenticeships. Workers can acquire practical knowledge and experience in a virtual environment, without risk to their safety or to the equipment.

The digital twin in construction: revolutionizing project management

A building can also have a digital twin! The Building Digital Twin is a virtual replica of a building or infrastructure in real time, fed by continuous data. This data comes from sensors and 3D modeling software, and can be of several kinds:

  • geometric and structural ;

  • architectural ;

  • mechanical ;

  • electrical..

BIM digital mock-up and digital twin are closely related, but they don't refer to exactly the same concept! Here are the main differences:

  • the digital mock-up is a static representation, whereas the digital twin is dynamic and regularly updated as the project evolves;

  • a digital twin allows more data to be shared than a scale model (geometric data, material properties, equipment specifications, construction schedule, etc.);

  • the mock-up is used more during the design phase of the project, while the digital twin also enables continuous monitoring of the building's performance and maintenance after construction.

The digital twin thus offers the possibility of optimizing processes, improving performance and facilitating collaboration in several industrial sectors. It has become (or is becoming) an essential tool in the construction industry, and future technological developments are sure to make it even more indispensable!
