BIM optimizes revitalization of railway bridge with concrete structure

Trimble's Tekla software was essential for the structural project that should strengthen the main construction site on the network managed by the Rumo Concessionaire, which is responsible for transporting grain to the Port of Paranaguá (PR).

It's almost 600 meters long and 60 meters high. Did you hear that? Well, that sums up the complexity of the structural project we're about to talk about. Add to that the remote location, above the forest and at the junction of rivers in the Campos Gerais region of Paraná, and it becomes clear that the subject is the revitalization of the Arcos Bridge. It is listed as a National Artistic Heritage Site and is part of the Southern Railway Network, which transports grain to the Port of Paranaguá. The stretch is managed by Rumo, which is seeking to expand the network's throughput capacity. As a key crossing point, the Ponte dos Arcos is the largest work of art on the route and its structural reinforcement is a sine qua non condition for Rumo to achieve its goal of increasing the volume of cargo in its locomotive wagons.

This is the responsibility of Bagio Engenharia, the company responsible for the structural project that will guide the revitalization work on the Arcos Bridge. Dorival Bagio, a partner in the company and a structural engineer, is experienced and has been in the profession for over 30 years. He is coordinating the project and reveals that the use of advanced technologies is essential to the success of the operation. "I estimate that the adoption of BIM modeling software is reducing project time by around 50%," he says.

It refers to the Tekla Structures software from the US company Trimble. It is used to draw (model) the project in the third dimension. "From the moment we make each registration, the software generates the drawing automatically, relating all the surveys with optimum accuracy," he explains.

The structural project is due to be completed in February this year, with a total of six months to complete it. The process began with topographical measurements and abseiling by technicians to certify the main points to be restructured. "Then all the points of apparent pathology were surveyed using drones," he says. These operations were timed so as not to impede constant train traffic, as we were at the height of the grain harvest.

The structural engineer speaks with the expertise of someone who has 14 Tekla licenses and has designed more than 1,800 projects using the system over the last 10 years. Among the success stories are some recent award-winning projects, such as the Petry Arena.
