TRIMBLE® VRS NOW - Frequently Asked Questions

Product Definition

  1. How does Trimble VRS Now work?
Trimble VRS Now is a new service that provides you with instant access to RTK corrections throughout Great Britain. Using the precise data supplied by the Ordnance Survey network, Trimble delivers centimetre-accurate RTK anywhere in the network, customised for each rover's exact location.

  2. Can multiple users share a Trimble VRS Now subscription plan?
Yes. Trimble VRS Now has a unique licensing plan that allows a single license to be shared across multiple users and multiple jobs. Only one user can connect using the same username at one time, however.

  3. Is my Trimble VRS Now subscription plan linked to a specific rover or mobile positioning device?
No. A Trimble VRS Now subscription plan is not rover specific. Authentication is achieved via username and password only. This feature streamlines resource allocation for multi-crew operations.

  4. Should I expect downtime?
The Trimble VRS Now system is engineered for maximum availability and is managed 24/7 to ensure the highest amount of uptime. There will be infrequent periods of scheduled maintenance that will impact availability. In addition, a reliable mobile carrier signal is necessary to connect with the system.

  5. What is the active period for a Trimble VRS Now license?
Licenses for Trimble VRS Now in Great Britain are offered as an annual subscription to the system.

  6. Is the Trimble VRS Now service similar to what the Ordnance Survey uses?
Yes. Trimble VRS Now is identical to the system software in use by Ordnance Survey. However Trimble VRS Now has separate, redundant components designed specifically to handle the volume required of the subscriptions service.

  7. How can I tell if VRS Now service is available in a certain area?
The Trimble VRS Now site shows a map of the general network coverage area. See: http://www.trimble.com/vrsnow_map.shtml. Generally speaking, Trimble VRS Now is available to you anywhere within the dark grey area of the map. Mobile phone service is a critical component to functional operation of the system. Without a reliable signal from your mobile communications service, your ability to connect with the system will be limited.

  8. Are there any specific cellular providers with whom I need to work?
No. Because Trimble VRS Now can use both circuit switched (GSM) and packet switched (GPRS) mobile telephony (also UMTS, where available), any carrier offering adequate coverage for the area you are interested in will suffice.

  9. In addition to a subscription plan, what other components will I need to begin using the Trimble VRS Now service?
All that is needed is a rover (i.e. Trimble R8, Trimble R8 GNSS or Trimble 5800, or quality third-party receiver) data collector, and a functioning mobile phone device with a reliable signal.

  10. How frequently are new corrections delivered to my rover in the field?
The Trimble VRS Now system is optimized to deliver tailored corrections for each rover in the field once per second. However, latency may be introduced into the system based on the performance of the mobile provider being used.

  11. Are field base stations obsolete now that Trimble VRS Now is available?
No. In many cases all the user needs is a subscription to Trimble VRS Now, however, there may be cases when a field base station is more economical. An example is working on a site for extended periods of time with multiple rovers.

  12. Are there any specific hardware restrictions?
For RTK corrections, the subscriber needs at least a dual frequency GPS receiver capable of working with RTCM 2.3, 3.0 and/or CMR+. The receiver also needs the ability to send out a NMEA GGA position message if the subscriber wishes to use the VRS service.

  13. What correction formats does Trimble VRS Now offer?
Trimble VRS Now delivers the following correction types:
    • Trimble VRS
    • Single-base RTK
    • DGPS

    Delivery Protocol
    • RTCM 2.3, 3.0, CMR+
