The Galaxy Sentinel™ GMDSS two-way satellite communications system meets the requirements for the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). GMDSS, an amendment to the IMO's Safety of Life at Sea Convention, specifies the communications systems for sending distress alerts, coordinating search and rescue operations, and disseminating maritime safety information, such as weather reports and hazards at sea.

The Sentinel is also well-suited to the needs of fishermen who want reliable messaging and position reporting to improve the efficiency of their operations, and Sentinel is approved for use by fishery management organizations around the world.
