Nomad_BCBUPDATE.exe
(1097 KB)This file installs the NAND chip Firmware Patch on your Nomad handheld computer. This patch has been released to address an issue with the timing parameters of the Nomad NAND chip.
Installation Instructions:
- Download Nomad_BCBUPDATE.exe and save it to your PC.
- Execute Nomad_BCBUPDATE.exe from your PC.
- Follow Instructions in the upgrader utility to install the patch
Issues Addressed:
A very small percentage of Nomads have an incorrect setting for the NAND chip timing parameters and may show symptoms when memory intensive applications are running. The symptoms may include random lockups and incorrect program operation including extended boot time, freezing during the boot up process, loss of the operating system, or messages such as 'Windows CE not Loaded'.
Trimble recommends that all Nomads be updated with this firmware patch to avoid the potential problems that may occur if your Nomad is affected. The patch will not compromise any of your data. However as a good practice, we always recommend backing up important data on a regular basis. If you are unsure if your Nomad already includes the patch, there is no harm in installing it again.
This file is compatible with Nomad computers running firmware version 1.0.4 and NomadX (with integrated WWAN) computers running firmware 1.0.3.
If you do not have current firmware, Trimble recommends upgrading to the latest version. Future versions of the Nomad OS will incorporate the changes in this patch.

(142 KB)This file installs the WLAN driver update on your Nomad handheld computer. This driver update has been released to address the issue of losing a known good WEP key on the Nomad.
Installation Instructions:
- Download NomadWLAN_2.1.zip to your PC.
- Open the Zip file and extract the NomadWLAN_2.1.CAB file.
- Transfer the NomadWLAN_2.1.CAB file from your PC to a folder of your choice on your Nomad (using Microsoft ActiveSync or a storage card).
- On the Nomad, use the File Explorer tool to find the folder containing the NomadWLAN_2.1.CAB file.
- Tap on the NomadWLAN_2.1.CAB file to initiate the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted, tap OK to restart the Nomad
- You can determine if the new driver has been installed on a Nomad by tapping Start / Settings / System / Remove Programs. If it is installed, you will see an entry for "Nomad WLAN driver v2.1."
Note: This patch will not persist after a factory-default reset. It must be installed again.
Issues Addressed:
- Nomad sometimes loses a known-good WEP key, prompting the user to re-enter the key. If the user does not enter the key correctly, the Access Point (AP) (and its settings) may be removed from the preferred network list.
- A workaround has been implemented to improve this issue; it is not 100% fixed.
- Research indicates that the Nomad may fail to connect to a network due to weak signal strength from an AP.
- The Microsoft portion of the WLAN stack (incorrectly) interprets this failure as a bad WEP key, and subsequently throws the key away. The network settings are also discarded if the user does not re-enter the correct key. Microsoft has acknowledged a problem with their design. Corrections to the design are not expected until Windows Mobile 7.
- As a workaround, we have implemented a signal-strength filter in the driver. This will prevent Nomad from attempting to connect to an AP with weak signal strength.
- Preliminary testing indicates that key loss occurs much less frequently with the filter. However, due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, key loss may still occur.
- WLAN sometimes gets into a state where it shows "Connecting" forever, even when attempting to connect to different Aps. A device reset was required to correct the problem.
- This has been fixed.
- This problem was caused by an abrupt shutdown of WLAN while in the process of connecting to an AP.
- The driver now performs a more graceful shutdown, ensuring all pending operations have finished.
- In a multiple-AP, single-SSID environment (e.g. an internal corporate network), Nomad would not always attempt to connect to the AP with the strongest signal.
- This has been fixed.
- When multiple Aps exist with the same SSID, Nomad will now connect to the AP with the strongest signal.
This file is compatible with the following devices:
- Nomad with built in WLAN, running Nomad OS 1.0.4 and NomadX (WAN) running OS 1.0.3. Future versions of the Nomad OS will incorporate the changes in this patch.
