Trimble Adds Geocaching Application to its Trimble Outdoors Family
Geocache Navigator Provides an Instant, Family-Oriented, High-Tech Hide and Seek
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2006 Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) today announced the availability of its Geocache Navigator™ application, extending its Trimble Outdoors™ family of GPS-on-cellular applications. The unique Geocache Navigator application enables a diverse group of geocachers including enthusiasts, first-time users and families to embark on an outdoor hide and seek adventure with the convenience, security and cost-effectiveness of their GPS-enabled mobile phones. The product is supported with a new Web site at www.GeocacheNavigator.com.
Geocaching is an outdoor activity that is rapidly gaining widespread adoption with adventure seekers and families worldwide. Through a strategic collaboration with Seattle, Wash.-based Groundspeak®, Geocache Navigator users are seamlessly connected to the largest geocaching database in the world, with immediate access to over 200,000 caches across the U.S. Geocache Navigator is the only GPS-on-cellular service and product combination that offers the breadth of coverage sophisticated enough for the most advanced geocacher and simple enough for the novice user.
"Geocaching is a high-tech game of seeking hidden treasures around the world with the use of a GPS-enabled device. The game previously required several time-consuming steps, such as downloading information from the Web, uploading coordinates, manually updating cache finds and tethering an expensive GPS device," said Larry Fox, business development manager, Trimble Outdoors. "Together with Groundspeak's global database, Trimbles Geocache Navigator offers the same high-tech treasure hunt, but with the added convenience and cost-effectiveness of automatically navigating and managing the geocaching experience from a GPS-enabled cell phone."
With the Geocache Navigator application, users have instant access to hundreds of thousands of caches nationwide. Leveraging Groundspeak's geocaching.com database, users can query and log caches anywhere in the U.S. From a GPS-enabled phone, treasure hunters seek caches using a uniquely constructed, radar-like interface that provides a clear perspective of the cache location with respect to the user. Additionally, screens on the cell phone provide standard compass, speed, heading, location, cache description, hints and other useful information for both the beginner and the expert geocacher.
The Geocache Navigator application is the third GPS-on-cellular service offered through the Trimble Outdoors family of products. By integrating wireless communication technologies with intuitive GPS interfaces and Web databases, Trimble Outdoors applications support a diverse group of consumers; offering a wide variety of applications from fitness management, to off-road navigation and now geocaching options.
The Geocache Navigator application is currently available through Sprint (NYSE:S) and Nextel on approximately 20 GPS-enabled mobile phones for $6.99 per month.
