Trimble Awarded Navy Contract for GPS Receivers

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 25, 2002 - Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) announced today that it has been awarded a contract from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR), Special Missions Branch, for the procurement of ForceTM 5 GRAM-S and Force 5 GRASM-S (SAASM-based) receivers. The military-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers will be used as part of a high-precision marine survey system used by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO).

The announcement was made at the Institute of Navigation GPS 2002 Conference.

Trimble's Force 5 receivers will be integrated into Applanix Corporation's POS MV (Position Orientation System for Marine Vessels) inertial navigation systems. Two Force 5 receivers will be operated in tandem, to provide navigation and carrier phase data to the system's inertial navigation sensor to aid in supplying precise heading, attitude and position for use with shallow and deep-water single-beam and multi-beam sonar systems. The receivers will be used on NAVOCEANO operated T-AGS 51/60 class ships and Hydrographic Survey Launches (HSLs) for marine survey missions.

The one-year contract, with four one-year options, also permits other Department of Defense organizations to order Trimble Force 5 receivers under the same contract, subject to SPAWAR Contracting Officer/GPS JPO authorization.

Trimble's Force 5 GRAM-S and SAASM-based Force 5 GRASM-S are embedded, dual-frequency GPS receiver modules with Precise Positioning Service (PPS) capability. Designed in compliance with the NAVSTAR GPS Joint Program Office (GPS JPO) GRAM guidelines, both Force 5 receivers provide unequaled performance. The Force 5 GRASM-S receiver is based on the SAASM architecture that is mandated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for implementation in the next generation GPS receivers for all military users. The use of SAASM significantly enhances and ensures the U.S. and Allied military user the ability to obtain precise GPS position, velocity, time, and other GPS sensor information in all types of environments. Trimble's SAASM technology was granted GPS JPO security approval on May 1, 2000.

"We are pleased to have been selected by SPAWAR to supply GPS receivers for the Navy's marine survey missions," said Allen Edwards, marketing director for Trimble's Military and Advanced Systems Division. "The Force 5 receivers will provide the Navy with the most capable GPS-based precise positioning available for their survey missions and, at the same time, be in full compliance for military receivers to meet Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR) security and operational requirements."
