Trimble TA-12 GPS Receiver Granted First MSO-C129a Certification
LONG BEACH, Calif. Sept. 23, 2004 -- Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today that the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) Joint Program Office (JPO) has approved the Trimble TASMAN™ ARINC-12 (TA-12™) military GPS receiver for MSO-C129a Level B1/C1 Precise Positioning Service (PPS) operations. This certification enables the TA-12 to satisfy the requirements of the Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) operations in civil airspace and Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR) requirements simultaneously.
The announcement was made today at Institute of Navigation (ION) GNSS 2004 Conference.
The Trimble TA-12 is the first GPS receiver to obtain approval under the new Military Standard Order (MSO)-C129a. The MSO-C129a process was developed by the JPO PPS Equipment Certification Office (PECO) during the Pathfinder program, a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative for self-certification of user equipment. The TA-12 was selected as a model during the Pathfinder program because of its previous certification and fielding success.
In 1999 Trimble's TA-12 became the industry's first standalone PPS capable military GPS navigation receiver to gain FAA certification for operation within the NAS and ICAO controlled airspace when in the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) mode. Since its introduction, the TA-12 receiver has been installed on numerous U.S. Army and Air Force airborne platforms.
The twelve channel TA-12 receiver was designed, tested and documented to enable aircraft host navigation systems to be certified to the standards defined by the FAA TSO-C129a and later the JPO MSO-C129a for military aircraft. Standard features include all-in-view tracking, Fault Detection and Exclusion (FDE) and step detection in accordance with RTCA/DO-229, predictive RAIM to support FAA Notice 8110.60 operations, and B-RNAV performance for European operations. When operated in the PPS mode, Trimble's receivers provide needed NAVWAR features including anti-spoofing and high anti-jamming protection.
Because the TA-12 has also been TSO'd to C129a requirements when in the SPS mode, the receiver can be used for navigation in those international areas where the MSO reciprocity may not yet have been established. For those applications, the TA-12 can be switched in real time between PPS and SPS modes with no loss of continuity.
Now that the TA-12 receiver is certified to MSO-C129a requirements, aircraft integrators and OEM's have the ability to meet the DoD's stringent NAVWAR and CNS/ATM requirements with a single GPS receiver module. This allows them to optimize current assets in meeting the needs both of the tremendous growth in commercial air traffic and the mobility of the military without significant impact to life cycle costs.
