Trimble and TTPCom Align to Enable
Mass Market Telematics Solutions
SUNNYVALE, Calif. and CAMBRIDGE, U.K., April 16, 2002 - Trimble (NASDAQ:TRMB) and TTP Communications plc (TTPCom) (LSE:TTC), the world's leading independent supplier of technology for digital wireless communications, today announced an alliance to develop a range of products that combine TTPCom's GSM/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Bluetooth technologies with Trimble's proprietary Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. The agreement will enable automotive electronics, vehicle and wireless terminal manufacturers to develop highly integrated GPS and communications systems. The systems will be more power-efficient and produced at a lower cost than current industry solutions.
The first offering for the combined technologies is intended for automobile electronics manufacturers in navigation, traffic information, vehicle tracking and road tolling. By closely integrating TTPCom's wireless technology with its GPS designs, Trimble will be able to offer low-cost, low-power, location-enabled wireless communications functionality to manufacturers of vehicle navigation and telematics units. Current end-users of Trimble's GPS technology include Tier One automotive electronics suppliers to leading European car manufacturers such as BMW, Peugeot, Land Rover, Renault and many others.
In addition, TTPCom will incorporate Trimble's GPS technology into its fully-integrated silicon and software designs, which will add location functionality in TTPCom's next generation 2.5G and 3G technologies.
"Bringing together the expertise of our two companies will result in exciting new combined GPS/communications solutions for tomorrow's mass market vehicles," said Tony Milbourn, managing director of TTPCom. "Customers will be able to design highly integrated and cost efficient products that will deliver the benefits of high-speed data and interoperability with mobile devices to the motor industry worldwide."
"We are pleased to be working with TTPCom to provide combined GPS location and communication capability for use in leading edge telematics applications. The collaboration will provide innovative solutions combining the GPRS/Bluetooth/GPS technologies required in tomorrow's cars for increased security and safety on the road to enhance the driving experience," said Dennis Workman, vice president and general manager of Trimble's Component Technologies Division.
Telematics refers to in-vehicle electronics systems used for command and control of the vehicle, and for driver education and safety enhancements while on the move. This has become one of the fastest growing areas of the automobile electronics sector as navigation, traffic information and tracking features move rapidly from the specialist and luxury vehicle markets into the main stream. Strategy Analytics, a European market research firm, estimates that in Europe alone the market for telematics systems, in terms of revenue, will increase to U.S. $8.0 billion by 2006. Drivers will benefit from telematics systems by having greater confidence in their location on the road network and by having better control over inter-vehicle spacing and parking.
