Trimble SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna

The ultra-rugged Trimble® SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna is a valuable solution for contractors who want to conduct their own high accuracy site measurement tasks without hiring a contract surveyor. Ideal for use on small and large job sites, the SPS985 can serve as a GNSS rover system or as a Wi-Fi® enabled base station for other GNSS operations including machine control.

The SPS985 is the smallest and toughest GNSS receiver Trimble has ever built. With its enhanced internal shock isolation, the SPS985 is built for high-vibration use on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), quad bike or supervisor truck. User-friendly features such as integrated Wi-Fi and wideband radio communications, quick release connector, and smart phone configuration make it easy to use as a pole-mounted rover or base station.

The Trimble SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna and SCS900 Site Controller Software are ideal for:

  • Measuring and verifying original ground levels and site features
  • Monitoring real-time cut/fill information
  • Checking finished grade and laid material thickness against design elevations and tolerances
  • Computing progress and material stockpile volumes
  • Monitoring, and conducting quality control for earthworks and paving operations
  • Assessing as-built measurements and generating high quality reports for approvals and payment

As a component of the Trimble Connected Site solutions portfolio, the SPS985 also offers connectivity features that save administrative time and increase working productivity. When used with a Connected Controller such as the Trimble TSC3 or Trimble Tablet, job crews can connect to a mobile hotspot in the site trailer or supervisor's truck and receive GNSS corrections via Virtual Reference Station (VRS) or Trimble Internet Base Station (IBSS). They can also save considerable time by wirelessly synchronizing progress data and as-built information to the job supervisor or head office and receiving updated design information back without ever leaving the job site.

Features & Benefits of the Trimble SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna

The SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna combines unprecedented strength and durability into a compact form that is easy to use and virtually indestructible. In addition to its rugged exterior, the unit offers numerous features and benefits, including those listed below:

Compact, all in one solution With integrated GNSS receiver, antenna, Wi-Fi optional radio and battery, the SPS985 is ideal for site rover or rapid setup mobile base station.
Trimble xFill™ technology Available only in Trimble GNSS receivers, the optional Trimble xFill™ technology can expand site productivity by allowing short excursions into valleys and other locations where GNSS corrections were not previously available.
Bluetooth connection No cables needed for connection to controller, removing the chance of the SPS985 snagging on obstructions.
20Hz upgrade High data update rate for use on vehicles, allows the SPS985 to be used as a Site Supervisor System. More uses onsite means quicker return on investment.
Flexibility The SPS985 can be used as a base or rover, a pair of receivers can be used together as a base and rover, split to be two rovers or two bases depending on the requirement.
Trimble WebUI Eliminates travel to the jobsite for configuring and monitoring health of base station receivers.
Modernized GNSS Signal Tracking With 440 channels, CMRx as well as the ability to track GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, the SPS985 is a future proofed investment in positioning technology.
Built construction tough Survives repeated 2 meter pole drops onto concrete and the harsh conditions of the job site.
VRS and Trimble IBSS compatible The SPS985 can be used as a rover inside a VRS network, eliminating the need for a base station while maintaining high accuracy as baseline lengths are kept short.

Applications for the SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna

When used as a rover the SPS985 allows for maximum flexibility on a wide variety of site measurement tasks including pole-mounted for grade checking, ATV-mounted for progress monitoring, and truck-mounted for site supervision. For initial site reconnaissance, it can be deployed with satellite-delivered GNSS corrections without a base station. For higher accuracy site measurements such as grade checking, it can receive Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) corrections via the internal wideband radio, Wi-Fi or the Internet.

An SPS985 unit can be easily moved from carrying case to range pole, tripod, t-bar, or vehicle with a single click— making it easier and faster to get going and allowing for more flexibility of operation techniques. For example, a grade checker can mount the SPS985 to an ATV and easily conduct site topos, check as-builts and verify road centerlines where it is not easy or safe to walk with a range pole. Extending its productivity, the same unit can then be mounted on the roof of a supervisor's truck roof to collect and manage progress data.

As a base station, the SPS985 incorporates Wi-Fi communications for small site projects and optional wideband radio for long-range operations on large projects. Designed for ease of use, it will automatically establish a radio or Wi-Fi connection and transmit RTK corrections to another rover or machine control system. When it is that easy, construction crews can spend more time doing the work and less time setting up and maintaining the equipment.

Specifications of the Trimble SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna

Built on the advanced Trimble Maxwell™ 6 chip and Trimble 360™ technology, the SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna can utilize more GNSS constellations, satellites, and signals than traditional GPS, so it delivers greater accuracy in more challenging conditions such as under tree canopy and in urban areas. That also means more uptime using the system and more productivity for job crews.

The SPS985 is powered by advanced Trimble R-Track technology and the following satellite systems and correction sources:

  • GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou Navigation Satellite System
  • Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) such as WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, and QZSS
  • OmniSTAR VBS, XP or HP
  • Precision GNSS base station (RTK corrections)
  • DGPS using UHF radio links (RTCM)
  • Virtual Reference Station (VRS)
  • Trimble Internet Base Station Service (IBSS)
  • Trimble xFill™ technology

Contractors can expect faster initialization and more uptime during periods when traditional GPS satellite availability is limited. For more information on product specifications, please see the SPS985 GNSS Smart Antenna data sheet.
