James A. Kirkland
Vice President, General Counsel

James A. Kirkland joined Trimble as vice president and general counsel in July 2008. Prior to joining Trimble, he worked for Covad Communications for four years serving as general counsel and executive vice president, strategic development. Kirkland also served as senior vice president of spectrum development and general counsel at Clearwire Technologies, Inc. from March 2001 to October 2003. Kirkland began his career in 1984 as an associate at Mintz Levin, one of the leading communications law firms in the U.S., and in 1992 he was promoted to partner. Kirkland received his BA from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1981 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1984.

Kirkland currently serves on the Board of Directors of the California Emerging Technology Fund, a nonprofit organization formed to help bridge the digital divide in California, and the Technical Advisory Group of the California TeleHealth Network, which is building a statewide broadband telehealth network reaching underserved communities. Kirkland also served as Chairman of the Economic Development Working Group for Governor Schwarzenegger's California Broadband Task Force.
